Winchester Way
The traditional northern road out of Southampton although this varied down the ages in its more northerly stretches. In the middle ages this name was applied to the stretch of Above Bar Street north of Houndwell. By the 16th century the name is freely applied to the road crossing the Common, i.e. The Avenue.
