This road in Swaythling was the site of the Ford motor vehicle factory from 1953 until the factory closed in 2013. Before Ford's the site had been an aircraft factory from 1939, and then owned by Briggs Motor Bodies, who were taken over by Ford in 1953.

Some of the houses in Wide Lane were designed by Herbert Collins.
The Fleming Arms pub is in Wide Lane. This is an eighteenth-century building (source).
Swaythling Grange, demolished in 1974, was at the corner of Wide Lane and Mansbridge Road.
