Thorold Road runs from Cobden Avenue to Midanbury Lane in Bitterne Park. This area was developed from 1883 onwards by the National Liberal Land Company and many of the road names reflect the political leanings of that organisation. Thorold Road was named after James Edwin Thorold Rogers (1823-90), a professor of political economy and chairman of the National Liberal Land Company.
