A stream in the city's western suburbs, which rises rear the north-west corner of Chilworth parish, divides Coxford from Aldermoor, skirts Shirley Warren and bisects traditional Millbrook. It is the original Mill Brook (Anglo Saxon grindan broc), mentioned in the bounds of the Nursling land charter of 877, which gave its name to Millbrook. Its modern name derives from a 19th century tannery on the lower part of the stream. In the early 20th century it marked the county borough's west boundary.
