Sir George’s Road, which links the west side of Shirley Road with the east side of Park Road in Freemantle, was named after General Sir George Hewett. He was born in 1750 in Leicestershire but spent his entire working life in the British Army serving in India, North America, the West Indies and Ireland. He achieved the rank of general in c.1800 and was created a baronet in 1818. He retired to Freemantle House in 1822 and died in 1840. Freemantle House was formerly situated just to the north of the present-day Payne's Road. Hewett was buried in the catacombs of St James’s Church, Shirley and a memorial was erected in the church of St Nicholas, Millbrook.
