There were probably several salterns, albeit mostly unrecorded. A lease of 1616 records that Hugh Darvall undertook to make bay and white salt in premises at chapel near Our Lady Chapel, presumably the old mill. It may be presumed that one, or both, of the mill ponds were used as salterns.
