This street in Portswood was laid out from 1911 on land that had formerly been part of the Portswood House estate. It was named after Sir Russell Bencraft, the son in law of Walter Perkins who was the owner of Portswood House. Its most celebrated inhabitant was R. J. Mitchell, the aircraft designer, who lived at 2 Russell Place from 1927 to his death in 1937.
