This society was formed in 1862 and given the title ‘Royal’ by the Queen’s command in 1878. Between 1883 and 1897 a block of land between Winn and Westwood Roads was leased as pleasure and show grounds. A running track, tennis courts and other amenities were later added. Presidents have included various members of the royal family, Lord Palmerston and Lord Swaythling. For many years the society organized the horticultural section of the annual Southampton Show.
