This toll gate, belonging to the Southampton – Winchester Turnpike Trust, was situated on Bassett Avenue just north of Red Lodge House and Red Lodge Nurseries. There was a toll gate barring the road with a toll house on the opposite (east) side of the road. The turnpike trust was set up in the mid 18th century but the Red Lodge Toll Gate was probably added later as Southampton expanded. The trust went out of existence in 1885 and the lodge was presumably demolished after that date.
