The artist David Charles Read (1790-1851), who was born in Boldre and lived for much of his life in Salisbury, produced a number of paintings of the Southampton area. His patron, art collector Chambers Hall, lived at Elmfield Lodge or House on Millbrook Road and two of Read’s paintings, View Near Elmfield Lodge and Morning Effect at Elmfield Lodge, both now in the Ashmolean Museum, were executed from the garden there.
