Before the new Audit House was built on the High Street in the late 18th century the Proclamation House was situated in the west porch of Holy Rood Church and was the official place for making important announcements in the presence of the mayor and corporation. Election hustings were also held there. By the early 19th century proclamations were made from the balcony of the new Audit House, outside the Bargate, or the Custom House near the Water Gate.
