The Poultry Cross, under which the market for butter, eggs and poultry was originally held, stood on the High Street in front of St. Lawrence Church. In 1570, after complaints that the site was exposed to the weather, it was removed to the new Market House at the north end of the old Audit House in front of Holy Rood Church. In 1774 it was removed to the new Audit House on the lower High Street.
