Plummers department store was situated on the corner of Above Bar Street and Commercial Road. It was the oldest department store in Southampton, dating to 1896 when it opened as Plummer, Roddis and Tyrrell. It became Plummer and Roddis in the early 20th century and was subsequently taken over by Debenhams. The original building (images 2 and 3) was destroyed in the Blitz of 1940 and replaced by a new building (image 1), opened in 1965. The store closed in 1993 and the building was taken over by Southampton Institute, now Southampton Solent University, and renamed the James Matthews Building.
