This was originally the south portion of East Marlands field, cut off when New Road was built. It is bounded on the east by Palmerston Road and on the west by Above Bar Street. It has also been known as the Fairground, denoting the site in the 19th century of the Above Bar (or St Marks) Fair. It was renamed when the Palmerston statue was built here in 1868. A street directory of 1884 claims that this was the traditional site of the hustings, though this seems improbable.
