'Normannia'
NORMANNIA
Built 1912 by Fairfield Shipbuilding, Govan, for the London and South Western Railway (later Southern Railway) on the Southampton-Le Havre service. Normannia served as a troopship 1914-18, and was requisitioned in the same role again in 1939.
At 2pm 29 May 1940 she arrived at Dover from Southampton, to be ordered to Dunkirk. At 7pm, off Dunkirk, she was attacked by enemy aircraft and hit at 7.50pm. Although taken under tow, she eventually had to be abandoned and sank. Her crew was saved.
