The bronze statue of Earl Mountbatten was presented to the city in 1990 by developers Timberlaine Properties after they had restored some of the houses in Grosvenor Square. The statue is by New Forest sculptor Greta Berlin and stands nine feet high on a plinth in the centre of the square. Mountbatten lived at Broadlands and had close connections with Southampton and South Hampshire. He was the first patron of the City of Southampton Society between 1963 and 1979. He was killed by an IRA bomb in 1979.
