Mitchell, Bob
Richard Charles Mitchell (1927-2003) (Bob) was born in Southampton and educated at Taunton's School. He became a Labour member of Southampton Borough Council in 1955. In 1964 he contested the seat of Southampton Test for Labour, but lost by 348 votes. In 1966 he won the seat by over two thousand votes, but lost it again in 1970. In 1971 he succeeded Horace Maybray-King as MP for Southampton Itchen, in the by-election caused by Maybray-King becoming Speaker of the House of Commons. In 1981 he left the Labour Party to join the newly-formed SDP. He lost his seat at the next election in 1983.
