Midanbury
Midanbury is a district name applied to the high ground north east of Bitterne. The name has been spelt variously: the earliest form seems to have been Maidenbury, followed by Middanbury and Midanbury, and even for a time, Middenbury. The etymology of the name has is unclear but may be derived from Middan-burh, the middle bush of a group, where burh could be any sort of earthwork from a town to a tumulus; perhaps, in view of its situation, a contoured hill camp.
