The McCalmont family lived at Uplands, a large house in Highfield, in the second half of the 19th century. The Reverend Thomas McCalmont came over from Ireland in the mid century and by 1861 he had established himself at Uplands. His first son Frederick Haynes became a famous statistician. His third son Alfred Leighton (image below) was elected mayor of Southampton in 1877 at the age of 26, making him the youngest mayor of any town in the country. He died a year later of typhoid fever. There are two stained glass windows in Christ Church, Highfield dedicated to the Reverend Thomas McCalmont and his two sons.
