This was the post-medieval name of the lane between High Street and French Street, north of the site of the Audit House. It was named after the adjoining market. Alternative earlier names are Braggery's Lane, Cokerewe's Lane, Halveknyghtes Lane, Small Lane and possibly Narrow Lane. In the 12th century the lane appears to have run to the seashore, i.e. its west end probably coincided with Granttes Lane.
