Malt Houses
1) In the 19th century a malt house was situated on the south side of Simnel Street at the west corner of Pepper Alley, i.e. in Upper Bugle Street.
2) In Georgian and early Victorian times the Old Malt House stood on the corner of The Strand and Hanover Buildings, approximately where the Debenhams store now stands. This malt house was painted by Philip Brannon in 1857, shortly before it was demolished. It was probably associated with one of the breweries in East Street.
