Magnel, Le
This name is found only in the 1454 terrier and relates to a property immediately adjoining the two old cottages that formerly occupied the south side of Westgate Street. Presumably the property so named is the plot immediately adjoining to the south, i.e. on the east side of Cuckoo Lane. If, as suggested by O.G.S. Crawford, the name signifies a Mangonel, a large catapult for hurling stones at assaulting troops, then this appears an admirable site for such an engine to defend a great arc of the town's south-east walls and approaches from the sea. A large stone ball was found on the site on 28th August 1966.
