Lion Inn
The medieval tavern known as New Inn stood on the east side of Above Bar Street at the south-west corner of Houndwell Field was. In the 16th century it was renamed the Lion Inn and in the 18th century became the Red Lion. According to Tony Gallagher (Inns and Taverns of Southampton) the Pembroke Hotel was later built on the site of this inn. Pembroke Square was originally named Red Lion Square.
