Laundry Road in Shirley Warren dates to the late 19th century and was named after a group of small laundries established here in the early years of its history. They have since been closed down. Many of the laundries handled washing from the passenger liners that docked at the port. In 1966 the humble origins of the name offended some residents who sought to change its name to St Jude’s Road. The attempt failed.
