Lagoon, The
Before the Norman Conquest a lagoon stretched between modern-day Terminus Terrace and the Itchen, with its north shore line on Chapel Road and with Canute Road / Crosshouse Road representing the bar. The drying up of the west end of this lagoon produced the medieval Saltmarsh, used first for grazing and later for cultivation. The tidal mill (Chapel Mill) persisted and a millpond and timber pond survived at the east end of the site until the 20th century.
