At the turn of the 20th century Kingsland Market was an uncovered street market occupying Kingsland Square and spilling over into surrounding streets (image 1). In the 1980s it was moved into a covered area adjacent to the Square (image 3). The market's history can be traced back to a medieval charter, but in its present form it dates back only to 1881. In the 1990s the council sought to abolish it, but it continues in a truncated form.
