Kanes Hill is a modern spelling, a corruption of the personal name Keane. The 1844 tithe map shows Susannah Keane owning 13 acres of plantation and arable land between modern day Kanes Hill and Netley Firs (now Close). Both names recall Susannah Keane as Netley Firs was the name of her house.
