The name, as a locality, is primarily associated with that of a small district on the east side of the River Itchen opposite the original crosshouse ferry and sometimes referred to as Itchen Ferry village or simply Itchen Ferry. The name was also applied to the Urban District formed in 1898 consisting of the old St Mary’s Extra civil parish and, from 1909, Sholing. The name is now applied to the modern parliamentary constituency which incorporates all the districts on the east side of the river and some of the riverside districts on the west side.
