The naval officer and later vice-admiral Askew Paffard Hollis (1764-1844) lived in Highfield and died there in 1844. He entered the navy in c.1774 and saw service in the Napoleonic Wars against the French and in the American War of Independence. He retired from active service in c.1821 and may have come to Southampton soon afterwards. Street directories list him in Highfield from 1834.
