This was one of the large residences on Highfield Road. It was probably built in the mid 19th century - it is shown on the OS 1:2500 map of c.1880 - and was situated between modern Khartoum and Omdurman Roads. It was later renamed Highfield Mansions and then Highfield Hall. In the early years of the 20th century it was converted to a hotel for a short time before being acquired by the University of Southampton as a hall of residence. During World War One it was converted to a Red Cross hospital (image below). It was demolished in c.1932 and replaced by a new hall of residence called New Highfield Hall (see article below). The original name lives on in nearby Heatherdene Road.
