The art collector Chambers Hall (1786-1855) lived with his brother Thomas at Elmfield Lodge or House on Millbrook Road, before moving to London, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was a generous patron to the Hampshire artist David Charles Read who painted View Near Elmfield Lodge in 1835 and Morning Effect at Elmfield Lodge, both now in the Ashmolean Museum, and other views of the Southampton area.
