Edward Gibbon, the noted 18th century historian (author of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire), served in the South Battalion of the Hampshire Militia from 1760 to 1762. For the latter part of 1762 he was stationed at Southampton, taking private lodgings on the High Street. In October 1762 Gibbon, whose father had been an MP for Southampton in the first half of the 18th century, was elected an honorary burgess of the town.
