Sotonopedia

The town gallows were situated on the town's northern boundary on the Common to the west of the Avenue on a site now covered by the reservoirs. The last recorded execution to have taken place here was in July 1875 when a the former butler of Mrs Bagenal of 16 Above Bar Street was executed for stealing a quantity of plate after being dismissed from her service.
