Queen Elizabeth visited Southampton on 13 August 1560, coming from Netley Castle where she had been entertained by the Earl of Hertford. She left on the 16 August.

She also visited Southampton with her full court on September 4 1591, leaving on September 7 for the Earl of Southampton’s home at Titchfield. On leaving the town she was petitioned by a group of French Huguenots who thanked her for having “enjoyed her protection in this town for more than twenty four years”.
