In the 18th century the Baptist community met in the St Mary's district before moving to a new chapel in York Buildings in 1800. In 1818 a new chapel was built on the south side of East Street, opposite York Buildings. The building was converted to a cinema called the Picture Palace in 1911 after the congregation had transferred to the new Central Baptist Church in Devonshire Road. The East Street building had been demolished before 1940. A trade card, probably engraved by Philip Brannon, provides us with a rare illustration of East Street Baptist Chapel.
