In the late 18th century this school was situated in “a large, elegant and airy house” at 79 High Street, just south of Gloucester Square. Dr Speed’s history of the town includes an advert for the school from the year 1774 which ends with the following note: “Young girls have their linen and woollen mended in the school gratis for they are taught to do it themselves”.
