Driver, Samuel Rolles
The biblical scholar Samuel Rolles Driver was born in Southampton in 1846 and was educated at Winchester College and Oxford. He became Regius Professor of Hebrew and Canonry at Christ Church, Oxford in 1883 and remained there for the rest of his life. He published many books on the Hebrew language and on the literature of the Bible. His most influential work was the Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament, published in 1891. He died in 1914.
