Arthur Cozens was born in Sholing in 1880 and spent most of his working life as a clerk for the London and South Western Railway and later Southern Railway. In his spare time he sketched and painted the ships passing through the docks, working mainly in pencil and watercolour and occasionally oils. When he died in 1947 most of his work was donated to the borough and is now housed in the Art Gallery.
