Sir Alexander James Edward Cockburn was born in 1802. He was the Recorder for Southampton and from 1847 to 1857 the town's Liberal MP. In 1851 he became Attorney General and in 1859 Lord Chief Justice. Queen Victoria refused him a peerage on the grounds of his "notoriously bad moral character" (Dictionary of National Biography). He died in 1880.
