The house building firm of T. Clark and Sons began as a father and son enterprise in Station Road (now MacNaughten Road), Bitterne Park in 1895. In their early days Thomas Clark and his son John William Henry built many of the new houses in Shirley, the Polygon and Bitterne Park. After World War One they branched out into the garage business and owned car showrooms, motor workshops and filling stations. In 1919 the firm established a brick works on land that had formerly been part of the Townhill Park estate. In 1927 they bought and built on the Middanbury House estate, using bricks from their own brickyard.
