Chave, Sir Benjamin
Sir Benjamin Chave was one of Southampton’s most distinguished merchant seamen. He was born in Southampton in 1870 and was educated at King Edward VI School. He first went to sea in 1885 and subsequently spent his career with the Union-Castle line. He was knighted in 1921 after distinguished service in World War One.
He was involved in a number of local sea-based organizations and charities including the Master Mariners Club and the Mission to Seamen. For much of his life he lived at Glebe Court in Highfield. He died in 1954.
