Alderman Kitty Elizabeth Cawte nee Fleckley (1899-1969) was Sheriff of Southampton 1955 and Mayor in 1956. She married George Herbert Cawte, son of Henry Charles Cawte (1852-1930) the well-known and respected Southampton builder, in 1921. They had three children.
When George died suddenly in 1938 while campaigning for re-election as councillor for Shirley Ward, Kitty was asked by Shirley and Millbrook Ratepayers' Association to replace him. "Out of a sense of loyalty" she stood in his place and was elected with a considerable majority. She was elected Alderman in 1949. On her resignation from the Council in 1968, the then Mayor Alderman Mrs H K Johnson granted her the Freedom of the City.
