A short-lived cattle market was opened in October 1839 on a site north of the Terminus Station, in Love Lane (St Mary's Road) in a field owned by Mr Oakley, a market gardener. It apparently adjoined the Antelope Cricket Ground, but does not appear on the Town Map of 1845-8. A more permanent Cattle Market was opened in 1865 on the former cricket ground on the Marsh. James Lemon, Borough Engineer, set up the market on the north-west corner of the Marsh site in 1865-66.
