According to L. A. Burgess the cattle market was opened in 1839 on a site north of the Terminus Station. A. Temple Patterson has it being opened in 1865 on the former cricket ground on the Marsh. James Lemon, Borough Engineer, states that he set up the market on the north-west corner of the Marsh site in 1865-66. The market is not shown on the Town Map of 1845-46 but is clearly marked on the OS 1:2500 map of 1881. It would seem that Burgess has the wrong date, unless he is referring to another cattle market.
