Carriage Drive
This was a feature of the Common, constructed as a public amenity in 1832-3, and originally running from Cemetery Pond all round the northern reaches of the Common, returning to a point near Miles Cross. The entire north eastern segment has long since been abandoned, but the stretch lying west of the Avenue is today metalled and preserved in good condition and has indeed formed the central feature of much imaginative planting and other landscaping since its original inception. There is no thoroughfare for wheeled vehicles, except for bicycles, over the western stretch.
