Thomas de Bynedon was a 14th century wool merchant and four times mayor of Southampton (between 1316 and 1336). In 1318 he provided the land on which the new Holy Rood Church was built and in 1333 he was given the right to be buried in that church. It is possible that Bindon Road in Shirley was named after him.
