Butchers' Shambles and Meat Markets
The butchers' shambles originally lay outside the Friars' Gate on the lower High Street; from c.1300 this stretch of the High Street was known as Fleshmongers' (Flesmangare, etc.) Street After 1698 it was sited at the Market House (part of the old Audit House) in front of Holy Rood church. After 1774 it was moved to the new Audit House on the lower High Street. In 1821 the butchers’ market was established by the bridge over the canal in Bridge Street. Pigs continued to be sold on the old Audit House site until 1832 when they were removed to the Bridge Street site.
