The 19th century name for the public house, earlier named The Flag, occupying 58 French Street, of which the vault is Norman, while other features indicate 14th and 15th century rebuilding dates. Between 1912 and 1937 when it was sold to Southampton Council, the building was used as a boarding house. It later came into the care of the Department of the Environment and is now a museum, usually referred to as Medieval Merchant's House.
