Ran from Northam Bridge to Thornhill Park Road, and with Northam Road approximates to the former Northam Bridge Road constructed by the Northam Bridge Company in c.1799 to link with their newly-built bridge.
Three lengths of the road were renamed in August 1988 "to make it easier to locate individual houses" following the construction of Maybray-King Way. The stretch from Northam Bridge to Little Lances Hill became Bitterne Road West; from Little Lances Hill to the original Dean Road junction becameBitterne Road, Bitterne Village; and from Maybray-King Way junctions to Thornhill Park Road became Bitterne Road East. The actual house numbers remained the same.
