Bitterne Recreation Ground
Bitterne Recreation Ground, formerly situated off the east side of Pound Street, was popularly known as 'The Sandpit', a name that reflects its original purpose as a source of sand for building purposes. In the 19th century it appears to have become a play area, and in about 1920 it was enclosed and turned into a general use recreation ground. It disappeared in the 1980s when the by-pass was constructed.
