Bars of Hampton
In 1180 William Briewere the Forester of the Forest of Bere was given powers to arrest anyone transgressing between the 'Bars of Hampton' and the gates of Winchester. Dr Speed Identifies the 'bars' with the Bargate, but both the Reverend Sylvester Davies and Lawrence Burgess think that this is not certain, and it may refer to a location on the boundary of the town's liberties.
